The Story behind Things Vintage CA

A Little History

My name is Stephanie and I am the founder of Things Vintage CA.

My love for vintage clothing started many years ago. I have always had an appreciation for quality clothing materials such as silk, cotton, leather, wool and cashmere. Finding quality clothing in today’s fast fashion is difficult and often comes with a high price tag. Furthermore, the environmental impact of fast fashion is something all of us should consider.

My general interest in history has also drawn me to vintage clothing. Fashion is a response to what is happening around us. Each era gives us a glimpse to the past.

For example, if we look at the 1940s, an era much dominated by WWII, materials such as nylon, silk, wool, leather, and zippers were needed in wartime production. During this time, clothes were rationed. There were often limitations on the types of garments available, the materials used and the amount that could be used in making a garment. The 1940s female clothing silhouette had a uniform look, which was simple and fitted, boxy shoulders, a slim-belted waistline, and a hemline below the knee. The 1940s men clothing silhouette consisted of uniforms or suits. New suits were made with a wool-rayon blend instead of wool and often had striped fabric.

The 1970s was an era dominated by various events that affected people’s sense of security such as: the Vietnam War, different rebel groups, Watergate, the oil and gas crisis’, etc…People longed for peace and equality. Clothing from the 70s added sweetness, glamor and fun to an uncertain landscape. When we think of the 70s, we think of smock dresses, pantsuits, denim, flared pants and large lapels. Many different trends occurred throughout this era such as: the victorian and edwardian revivals, the deco revival, the gypsie trend, the pant suit, the disco trend, the punk rock trend, etc..

As one can see, there is a lot of history in vintage clothing!
